Flat Rubber roof installation in Columbus OH near IMPACT Community Action
Last month we finished a flat rubber roof installation on a commercial building in Columbus OH, right near IMPACT Community Action. This was a big job and the old roof was in real bad shape. You can see from the before photos that the existing rubber membrane was torn up, bubbling, and had water pooling all over the place. There was even an AC unit sitting on top of damaged material. It needed to be completely replaced.

The first thing we did was get up there and strip everything off down to the deck. Our guys used flat roof shovels and scrapers to pull up all the old rubber, tar paper, and debris. Once we got down to the decking we found some of the OSB boards needed to be replaced too. Thats pretty common with flat roofs that have been leaking for a while – the water sits and rots the wood underneath so of course we replaced those as well.
After we replaced the bad decking, we started laying down new insulation board. You can see in the photos the gray ISO board panels getting mechanically fastened with the round plates and screws. That insulation helps with energy costs and gives the new rubber membrane a smooth surface to bond to. We worked section by section across the whole roof making sure every panel was tight and secure.
This building is in a busy part of Columbus and a lot of the commercial buildings in this area have flat roofs and they all take a beating from Ohio weather. Between the snow, ice, and summer heat, flat roofs need to be installed right or they wont last.
